A Homemade Safety Gate

Corralling pets takes creativity sometimes. This homemade safety gate creates enough of an obstacle that you can usually keep your little critters from the hazards of stairways and other forbidden areas in your home. Create a frame with 1″ PVC pipe and four corner joints. Cut two PVC pipes to the width you desire and two pieces to the height you’d like. Join them together, and sew a gate sized pocket to slide the frame into. Stitch up the forth side of the pocket (or sew in velcro or buttons), and you’ve got a safety gate to keep those four-legged friends from running amuck and getting hurt.

Light a Fire Anywhere

As we’ve started planning some of our outdoor adventures for the year, we’re gearing up our gear, too. For our outdoor fire place and for camping, we load up a mason jar with wooden matches. We close the jar with an air tight lid. We attach a piece of fine sand paper to the top of the lid so we can strike our matches right on the lid and light a fire anywhere. Remember that all matches are not created equally, so make sure to use “strike anywhere” matches for this hack!

How to Open a Jar That Won’t Open – Duct Tape Style

This hack doesn’t require a whole lot of explanation. Make sure your jar lid is dry, get about a foot of duct tape, stick one end firmly to the left edge of the jar (with the loose end of the tape coming towards you). Then just get a firm grip on the jar with one hand and pull smoothly on the tape with the other. That’s it, you’re ready to spread your marmalade or whatever you’re trying to get at. Enjoy!

Lip Balm Emergency Cash Supply

chapstick-cash

Headed to the beach and don’t want your cash stolen? Grab an old Chap Stick or other lip balm container and remove what’s left inside (including the inside portion of the twist up mechanism). Take all the cash you’ll need for frozen, chocolate-covered bananas, roll into a cylinder with a diameter smaller than the tube and stash that cash! Depending on your currency of choice and the brand of lip balm, you may need to fold the cash lengthwise before rolling to get the right fit (just make sure you leave enough cash sticking up above the top of the tube that you can still grab the bills easily). Don’t forget about your stash and try to use it on your lips though, cash residue has a low SPF!
